How to Measure for Carpet
You can
always get a rough idea of how much carpet you’ll need by figuring out the
square footage of the room (length x width).
But buying
carpet is a lot like buying a piece of fabric for a dress – You'll need to buy
more material than what you'll actually use. Edges have to be cut onsite to fit
the space and you absolutely need a little extra square footage to work with.
While
carpet is sold by the square foot, carpet comes in 12-foot wide rolls (also 13
by 6, and 15-foot rolls, which are great if you have an extra wide room.) So,
even if your room measures 8' X 10' (80 square feet), you'll still need to buy
a 8' X 12' foot (96 square feet) or larger piece of carpet.
You’ll
likely need a professional measure if you plan on having it installed for you.
For a modest fee, most retailers will come out ot your home and measure, often
reimbursing you if you purchase the carpet through them.
